No compost at home? No problem! / No tienes compostaje en casa? No hay problema!

Did you guys know that all the food waste we send to our landfills releases methane (a greenhouse gas that is 28 times stronger and more harmful than CO2 emissions) while decomposing? Yes, I’m talking about all the fruit, veggies, grains and other food leftovers we put in the trash “thinking” they magically disappear the minute we close the trashcan’s lid. Well, I got some news. There’s no “Abracadabra” here! Every time we throw something away, our planet takes the fall for us. And now, we are at that point, where there are no more safety nets to prevent our planet from hitting bottom. Now, it’s up to US to join forces and become responsible for every action and decision we take. One way of helping relieve some of the pain we are inflicting on nature is...COMPOSTING! And no, not having a compost at home is NOT an excuse. You can always find someone who composts around you. Like I did here in Miami with @verde_market and @back2earthusa! Here are some useful tips to make this easier for you:

  1. All the leftovers of your meals, put them in reusable ziplock bags and FREEZE them. I’m vegan, which means I eat a lot of fruits, grains and vegetables. I freeze the peels, bottoms, leaves, pulp of my juices, pits, etc. I save some pulp to make veggie burgers and crackers, the rest I send to compost. Others things I compost: dry leaves of my plants, coffee grounds, hair, used wood matches, used eco paper towels, dog hair, dog food... (Below you will find a link to a helpful article below with a longer list of things you can compost)

  2. Once your freezer is getting a bit full with your frozen compostable waste, take it to a compost! You can find people who compost around you with this app @sharewaste. In Miami, I take mine to @verde_market and @back2earthusa.

  3. That's it! This simple and powerful. By composting, we can all help reduce emissions by 2.3 billion tons! More info below!

Off you go towards a more conscious lifestyle!! 💚♻️

What is Ethical Fashion?/ Qué es la Moda Ética?

“No blood. No sweat. No tears.” This should be the mission statement of every single fashion brand but we are sadly not there yet. The reality is truly heartbreaking and I hope this post opens your eyes and minds to the power you have as consumers, influencers, and humans. This week is Fashion Revolution, and an opportunity for you to become informed and start asking the right questions. The fashion industry is not only the second most polluting industry after oil, but it’s also one of the most unethical ones. Especially when it comes to fast fashion and the big stores that mass produce clothing paying the hands that make every piece below minimum wage. We are talking about paying young women and men less than $2 per day to work in inhumane, unstable and unhealthy factories for hours! This is why @fash_rev began six years ago. Right after an entire building with garment factories collapsed in Bangladesh killing 1138 workers. The good news? YOU CAN STOP THIS. Start by reading labels. Support the right brands. Ask companies for transparency. If their website doesn’t show their practices, or where the products are coming from, ask them. Email them. DO something! Stop being a robot who adds products in a cart without analyzing the impact of each. We can’t afford to play blind anymore. Every dollar you spend sets a demand in motion and companies listen to numbers, so show them what’s real. Become wiser. More mindful. Reuse your closet as much as possible, fall back in love with old pieces, swap with friends, and when shopping...shop WISELY! Choose sustainable and ethical brands that care about their workers’ wellbeing as well as the materials they are using. Look for biodegradable, nontoxic, plantbased dyes, organic, fair-trade. Watch films with powerful information (Two I recommend are The True Cost and River Blue). Make the connection so innocent people and our planet don’t suffer for a $9 t-shirt you will probably wear once or twice.

Here are a few infographics with mind-opening information. I’ve also partnered with some incredible influencers to provide you with a guide to what Conscious Fashion is all about! Read it, digest it, share it. Together, we can heal what’s broken. Including a broken system and politics.

With conscious love,

Valeria.

Cruelty-free & Sustainable Cashmere is finally here!/ Lana Ecológica y Libre de Crueldad!

It’s EARTH MONTH! This means I will be promoting sustainable and ethical brands now more than ever in the hopes that you connect with them and choose to support their world-changing missions. Starting with Naadam, a sustainable and ethical fashion brand I’m beyond proud to partner with to bring this HUGE ECO GIVEAWAY for you! As I’ve shared with you before, I haven’t worn cashmere or any other type of wool in years because of the cruel animal practices behind the industry (animals having their tails cut off, left with wounds open, bleeding to death, etc) but Naadam is reshaping this! Naadam is the first ethical and cruelty-free cashmere brand in the market! How are they doing it right? Beautifully and mindfully! All animals are hand-combed (not sheared!) and are cared for and treated humanely as a WAY OF LIFE, not merely a practice. They also pay their herders 50% more and…. (wait for it!)…. use ahimsa silk! This is silk that has been produced by waiting for the silkworms to hatch from their cocoons and later boiling the empty cocoons rather than the boiling the live silkworms, like ordinary silk methods. Naadam also uses clean energy-powered manufacturing, non-toxic dyes, and is rolling out biodegradable plastic bags. This is the only cashmere brand that is Cradle to Cradle certified for their high standards focused on protecting the earth and basic human rights. As if all this weren’t incredible enough, Naadam also makes sure the goats get veterinary care on a yearly basis to prevent harmful diseases, and constantly looks for ways of offsetting their CO2 emissions.

Their line is gorgeous, warm and comfortable, and there are a few pieces I adore so much I’ve been wearing on a weekly basis! Below are the photos of my favorite styles, AND…. the details for this $4,500 GIVEAWAY featuring some of my favorite brands! The sustainable kind!

ECO Giveaway:

Naadam and I have partnered with @the_citizenry, @reformation, @tataharperskincare, @avocadomattress, and @packagefreeshop to gift a lucky soul over $4,500 in products to help you live your best eco-friendly life!

If you've been following me on IG or reading my blog posts for a while, you already know that in here we promote a conscious and sustainable lifestyle. And, part of that, includes the actions you take on a daily basis. Even the smallest ones! Your daily habits. Especially those at home. We can all reduce our negative impact on nature by choosing the right products to use at home. From your water filter, to your cleaning products, to your toilet paper! Yes, I said toilet paper! By switching to recycled toilet paper from virgin toilet paper you can help save trees! Imagine this: “If every household in the US replaced one 4-pack (of 240 sheets) virgin toilet paper for recycled ones, we could save 740,000 trees”! Such a powerful impact with something as simple as your bath tissue! A brand I discovered three years ago is Seventh Generation. Besides selling home products (like plantbased laundry detergent and dishwasher), they also have recycled toilet paper that is whitened without chlorine bleach! And YES…it’s soft! Your tush and our planet will thank you. If you are ready to stop playing blind and make the change, then go to Seventh Generation to browse through their amazing plantbased products. Can't wait to see how you transform your homes into sustainable ones! For more information and details on how I designed my sustainable home, use the search box at the bottom of my home page and type “home”.

Chendell: a natural warrior! / Chendell: un guerrero natural!

Chendell. A book that awakens those who haven’t connected with nature yet, and motivates those humans who have already found its magic to keep protecting it!

When the Chendell team reached out to me to review this book on my blog, I hesitated. I didn’t know what to expect so I asked them to give me the opportunity to read it first so I could then decide to review it or not. Within the first 20 pages, I found my answer. Leslie Landis has created a little treasure with this book. A treasure for EVERYONE. Kids, teens, adults. Chendell shares a story I can relate to, and also one I know my thirteen year old sister would absolutely adore. A great introduction to the importance of protecting our earth, and trusting the universe and its plan for us.

I don’t want to spoil the story for you but I will give you a few hints that will hopefully leave you craving for more. Chendell tells the stories of two people completely unrelated to each other, and both with a great passion for nature. Jingson (Jamie) Chen is a young Chinese man with long black hair who discovers early in his life that he can communicate with trees. Robin Dell, is a tall American girl with green eyes and auburn hair who can communicate with insects and controls their behaviors with her thoughts. They don’t know of each other’s existence, but the universe brings them together in random ways so they can learn about the definition of genuine and honest love, and merge their powers to preserve nature and find cures for diseases like cancer and MS. After their PhD studies, they both travel to the Manu National Park in Peru to research different plant and insects. During that trip, they encounter a shaman whom, by offering them one drink, gives birth to Chendell. A combination of the best traits of both Jamie and Robin. Two halves of one person. An avatar with one green-colored eye, one dark brown-colored eye, and black and auburn hair.

….And you’ll have to get the book to continue with this story. It’s worth it! Get one for yourself, your kids, your friends. This book is easy and fun to read and you can buy it on Amazon! I finished it in a few hours.

Chendell.

In case you guys are looking for conscious gift ideas for the Holidays, here’s one I’ve been dying to share with you! A DIY (Do-it-yourself) organic and nontoxic body butter you can create at home, pour into cool jars and gift to those you love! At least, that’s exactly what I did! :)

The brand I used to source all the vegan, organic and natural ingredients is Sky Organics! They sell products in big containers you can order and use at home to create your own beauty products, over and over again, without producing too much waste! From body butters to lip balms and facial oils. They have all the ingredients you need to become your own beauty chef at home! The DIY recipe I did was their mango body butter. Prep time was around 10 minutes, and then I just placed my creation in the fridge for 2 hours, and later added a few drops of essential oils (Peppermint and Lavender) to it and voila! Non-toxic, affordable, natural and organic body butter with ingredients we can all pronounce and understand. Making it was also really easy and fun! The great thing about using coconut oil, almond oil, mango butter, and shea butter as ingredients is that if you spill/drop them, you can immediately wipe them with your hand, rub your hands together and apply them on your skin and hair! And when it comes to the essential oils, get creative! Instead of using 10 drops of one scent, I chose to use two oils (Peppermint and lavender) and 5 drops of each. The combination created a delicious and powerful aroma!

In case you guys are ready to give SkyOrganics a try, I’ll leave you with the recipe and a video tutorial I shared on instagram last week. I hope you enjoy making this as much as I did! DIY is all about letting go of expectations and perfection, and flowing with your creativity! Use code WTS20 for a 20% discount, and head to SkyOrganics’ Blog for the detailed recipe.

Sustainable toilet paper! / Papel higiénico ecológico!

Buying toilet paper is usually a nobrainer for us humans. We go to a store or browse online, find a brand we’ve heard of, pay, use, throw away, repeat. But what if I told you that even with the toilet paper you use at home, you could become a more sustainable and mindful consumer. Yes!! Aria has created toilet paper that is not only better quality and softer than recycled toilet paper, but also better for our environment! It is biodegradable and made from local and sustainably sourced trees that are within 100-mile radius from their mill using practices that are certified by Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®). Are you in love with the sound of this already? Wait, because there’s more! The energy they use is 100% renewable and generated by the bark and wood residues from pulping. This “biomass” helps Aria reduce their use of fossil fuels, and production of CO2 emissions. And the packaging, you may wonder? The packing is made with plantbased materials and is recyclable. Furthermore, they plant 3 trees for each one they use! How about that for a toilet paper with a mission?! You can order Aria on their site or on Amazon with discount code 15PROMOARIA.

Any of you use this planet-loving toilet paper already?

Natural & Vegan Collagen! / Colágeno Vegano y Natural! Orgono Living Silica

Let’s talk collagen, shall we? Finding a healthy, natural and plantbased collagen supplement has been really difficult for me. As you may already know, most collagen products have animal byproducts as their ingredients and involve unnatural production processes. And then, a month ago, I found ORGONO ® Living Silica ™. Before saying yes to partnering with them, I decided to try their “Living Silica” supplement for myself. And… WOW! What a difference, guys! My nails got stronger in a matter of 2 weeks, my hair got shinier, and my skin got even more radiant! So.. what is this Living Silica exactly? In plain English, silica is the second most abundant natural and mineral element in our planet. It can be found in stones and quartz. (Yes, crystals!) The difference between Orgono Living Silica and other products in the market, hides in the extraction process. Orgono uses a natural process that dilutes the silica rather tan pulverizing it like most brands do. In this manner, we- the holistic consumers- get to have it at home in liquid and living form. Why is this important for our health? Well, Orgono’s Living Silica is a natural and vegan substitute for those not-so-natural collagen products we see in the market. This Silica hydrates, nurtures and boosts the collagen we already have in our bodies and increases its production by 19%, according to their research. It also removes toxins, aids digestion, acts as an anti-inflammatory, improves circulation, helps strengthen bones, balances your hormones, gets rid off acne and many more health benefits that will leave you in awe. All while helping us in an ayurvedic way!

How do we take it? Simple. I started with 1 tablespoon per day in an empty stomach for an entire month, and have now increased my dose to 2 tablespoons. I usually take it in the mornings before breakfast. Either by adding it to my smoothies, or by taking a sip straight out of the bottle :p .. Don’t worry. It sort of tastes like an aloe juice.

If you are ready to give this natural supplement a try, head to their website and use code “waterthruskin” for 25% off.

Let me know your thoughts or share your pictures and tag us! Can’t wait to see your results.

Ps: I’m also reading a book they sale on their site called “Organic Silica”. It shows all its uses and health benefits. Must read!

Tree Pulp Sunnies & Much More. Costa del Mar has gone green!

As #plasticfreejuly continues, here’s another brand I want to share with you. For all my adventurers and eco warriors, this one is for you! You may have heard of COSTA del Mar before but their new eco-friendly initiatives will leave you speechless! COSTA is making it their mission to leave the world just as beautiful as we all found it. How?

1) For starters, they have partnered with Ocearch to preserve one of our ocean’s most important creatures: sharks! The health and survival of our oceans depend on sharks, and we depend on our oceans. As scary as they may look, we sadly kill more of them per year than they accidentally kill humans. 100 million+ per year, that is. These are sea creatures that take years to reproduce and are crucial to preserving our waters. Our waters protect us from sunrays and rising temperatures, and generate 50%+ of the oxygen we breathe. So, do the math!

2) Four years ago, they started the initiative, Kick Plastic to eliminate single-use plastic wherever they can. Plastic takes from 100-500+ to decompose and always finds its way into our oceans killing thousands of sea creatures. Plastic is one of the most toxic man-made and petroleum-based materials for our earth, animals and people.

3) COSTA uses renewable resources like tree pulp and bio resin, from the castor plant, to make their sunglasses frames. Yes! This is where we all get to chip in as conscious consumers by supporting brands that have our planet in mind! The sunnies you see me wearing in this photo are made of tree pulp and come in the cutest cork case.

4) They have also partnered with Bureo to create a collection of sunglasses from discarded fishing nets collected in the ports of Chile! The collection is called “Untangled” and this video will make your heart beat a little faster.

Stay tuned for a giveaway coming up in the next few days! A lucky soul will win a pair of sustainable sunnies and a “Kick Plastic” water bottle!

A piece of my story & an eco-friendly mattress!

I have a little story to share with and it all starts with a new eco-friendly mattress. Some might understand, others might judge but truth is, this story is part of my personal and entrepreneurial journey and I’m actually very proud of it! Those that have been following me since I created this blog and @waterthruskin 3.5 years ago, know what I’ve been through to get to where I am today. For those that just joined us, here’s a little summary. I went from being a successful but very frustrated and depressed private banker to leaving it all to become a conscious lifestyle blogger and travel the world writing about eco-friendly hotels, sustainable fashion, genuine happiness and holistic healing. To achieve this dream of mine, I had to step out of my comfort zone, take risks and along the way...I lost it all! I hit many (much-needed!) rock-bottoms, jumped from home to home and ended up sleeping in my mom’s couch for months until the hard work and struggle paid off and I was able to get my own place. Part of my transition involved learning how to detach from all my material attachments and understand that abundance is only good when we use it to create positive change. (There’s a big difference between abundance and greediness! Confusing the two is what pushes us to get lost in ego.) So, for the past two years, I’ve spent and invested my earnings as a blogger and entrepreneur in a wise and conscious way. Including my apartment which I decorated in an eco-friendly way. Every detail and product in here is either vintage, recycled, reused, fairtrade or a gift. I honestly think I decorated this 600sf place with an $800 budget! The biggest issue was my mattress. I wanted an eco and vegan one that did not release toxins while I slept nor had wool inside (like most organic mattresses). Prices for mattresses like that range from $1500-$4000! So I told myself I would get mine once I achieved the things that needed to be done first. Entrepreneurial things, mostly. Building two ethical business that are now giving their first fruits and flowers! Every penny I made during the past two years went to trademarks, lawyers, documents, websites, platforms, and building a strong foundation for my dreams. This is the behind-the-scenes you guys normally don’t get to see, and one I truly want to share with you so you realize that we can never judge a book by its cover because there's always a story behind it. Always! Influencers, bloggers, entrepreneurs. Anyone taking their passions and work seriously go through experiences like these. It's not all perfect like some people show on social media. We have ups and downs and struggles, too. It's part of being human and amazing, if you ask me! I never became a victim of my story, instead, I found my strength in it. So, my point here. I’ve slept on an inflatable mattress -with a thin cotton mattress on top I received as a gift from friends when I first moved here- for the past year!! To be honest, it felt like an upgrade from my mom’s couch and my body actually liked it! (I sleep like a baby on hard mattresses/surfaces) Until today! Today we celebrate because I gifted myself my first eco-friendly mattress! Nope, no fancy shoes or bags like I would’ve bought myself years ago. But a real earth-friendly mattress! This- besides my two companies, Co-Founder and the amazing Miami and Barcelona team I’m working with- is an accomplishment I’m very proud of. So yes! Today we celebrate! Because I’m finally looking at the world and life with a completely different lens!

In case you wonder, the mattress I got is by Essentia and is made with pure, non-toxic, sustainable and organic materials. Memory foam made from natural and renewable tree sap, soothing essential oils used instead of petroleum, organic cotton and plant extracts used instead of wool. Everything I use on a daily basis and stand for, in a comfy fair-trade mattress!

I'm also wearing ethical and earth-friendly jeans made with organic cotton, providing fair working conditions and wages to the hands that make them by MonkeeGenes. Fair-trade sneakers made with natural and renewable tree rubber, organic cotton and plant based dyes by ZShoesOrganic. (Use code "Waterthruskin" for discount!) And fair-trade earrings empowering artisans in Colombia by MPWears. #liveconsciously

The healing power of natural medicine

Today, I want to focus on the power of essential oils and natural vitamins. They have been crucial in my life ever since I discovered their magic 3 years ago. Let’s just summarize the old me by saying that I had a kit full of toxic pills for every pain or symptom I woke up with. Headaches, allergies, muscle ache, menstrual cramps. I would numb them all with Advil, Tylenol, and Pamprin. Popping them in every 3hrs like candies. And, like most of you probably, I had never googled the long-term consequences of getting addicted to chemical meds. Then, one day, I had my Aha moment and decided to use search engines for things that actually mattered. Like my health for example! It is so naive of us to be shocked about cancer or other life-threatening diseases when we have been poisoning our bodies for years with the harmful products we use and the fattening and unhealthy food we eat. If you take a moment to think about it, it’s a simple no-brainer. If we feed our bodies chemicals (and overloads of stress), these natural mechanisms of ours (our bodies) will react to our irresponsible actions with warning signs to make us stop! So…why wait until the day we receive a “cancer alert” to change our diets, shopping habits, and daily routines? The day I chose to go toxic-free felt like being born again. I began using essential oils to relieve my daily headaches and allergies and, within a few weeks, I was able to break my addiction from harmful meds and found pleasure in learning about and using natural alternatives. It’s that simple! If you guys are ready to try essential oils, DoTerra is a brand I love and use 24/7. I have also given their vitamins a try. They are made with plants, fruits, essential oils and vegetable capsules, which makes them 100% natural and VEGAN! Ready to give nature a try? If so:

Speak up against sexual harassment. #metoo

Here’s the thing about sexual harassment… it leaves invisible psychological and spiritual scars other people can’t see or notice. Like a dozen women and loved ones I know, I’ve done a good job at hiding them too but- simply because you can’t see them- it doesn’t mean the scars are not there. This right here was me seven years go. A 22 year old outgoing girl. Fresh out of college, straight into the corporate world- a world that is still mostly dominated by men. Motivated, hard worker, honor student with exotic physical traits that caught the attention of the occasional bystander and made it easy for men AND women to label me. Big eyes, big lips, big smile, and a skinny body I used to dress in pencil skirts, suits and dresses to play the role of a Private Banker. For the past two years I’ve wondered when it was exactly that I lost respect and admiration towards men and, last night as I scrolled down the 435,469+ photos under the hashtag #metoo, I remembered it clearly. It all started in my teens with the boyfriend that called me a “slut” and punched the wall behind me while I cried my heart out and covered my face with my hands fearing that he wouldn’t be able to control his anger, or the stranger that slapped my ass at a bar while I was talking to my girlfriends, or the drunken assholes who pulled my arm and whispered discounting words in my ear, or the work colleague who couldn’t keep his eyes to himself and undressed me with every stare, or the other married work colleague who told a friend all the things he would do to me if he had the chance, or the “guyfriend” who put drugs in my glass of water, or the neighbor that followed my every footstep. Every word, every touch, every stare, every text, every action did not only push me to see men differently but it also gave birth to a fear women shouldn’t have to experience. The fear of looking too pretty or too sexy, the fear of walking alone at night, the fear of parking your car in a place with no surveillance cameras, the fear of getting in an argument with a man who can’t control his anger, the fear of staying at work until too late, the fear of living alone, the fear of having one drink too much, the fear of getting in a taxi or bus by yourself, the fear of speaking up and losing your job, the fear of men.

It shouldn’t take a Hollywood mogul sexually assaulting and hurting 30+ women for us to finally speak up! Now, more than ever, is the moment when women all around the world should come together as one force. Listen to each other, help each other heal, protect one another. None of us is alone in this and our past does NOT define us. Let's use the painful fuel and memories to become wiser, better, stronger and fierce women. And to all men that keep complaining that women have become too independent, too powerful and too intimidating, realize that your actions have pushed us to get here. Instead of becoming victims of your ego, we chose to rise above it. Want to be real men? Let us pave our own paths without throwing stumbling stones at us. Protect us. Listen to us. Stop seeing us as pieces of meat or toys you can play with. Realize what we could be your sister, daughter, mother, wife, friend. Respect us, treat us equally,  and set the example for your future generations. It’s that simple.

With love,

#metoo #speakup

Para mi gente Latina! <3 (in Spanish)

Telemundo Interview about a Conscious Lifestyle

This is probably the most beautiful and heartfelt interview anyone has done on my journey and projects, therefore, I felt the need to share it immediately. Some of you may have already seen it on TV, for everyone else, here it is! I'll do my best to try to get someone to add English subtitles to the video soon.

Love you, guys! Thank you for the constant support and love!

I was published on Forbes for being ME!

I woke up today to something I never imagined coming in this journey I've chosen to pursue. I was published in Forbes for CHASING MY PASSIONS, but there's a little story I want to share with you first. A few years ago, as a Private Banker, I remember dreaming about being published in Forbes as "the most successful banker EVER" (yeap, those were my words exactly!). I dreamt that I would have millions and become super successful without even knowing what success really meant! At that point, everything in my life revolved around the status, money, pretending to be someone I was not, and the addictive attachment to material things. In March, it will be 2 years since I left that world for good. I left it to pursue a life of passion. One that fed my spirit more than my wallet. One that revolved around me doing good, making a difference in our world, traveling in sustainable ways, and smiling. A lot! So...to be featured in Forbes for being ME (very much me!) and for chasing exactly what adds color to my life is absolutely PRICELESS! I never saw this coming and that makes this article even more beautiful! Thank you Forbes! Thank YOU, guys!

I hope this brings some motivation to your days! Love ya! And thanks for the constant support!
