Labels: Sustainable Fashion

This is not just a photo of my chicken legs or sustainable sneakers but a post for you to stop and read! Today, I’m answering all the questions I’ve received about vegan and sustainable fashion starting with "Vegan leather".

No, vegan leather does not mean the product you are buying is eco-friendly nor earth-friendly. Vegan leather (unless it is made from pineapples, apples, bananas, mushrooms, natural tree rubber, cork or any other natural material that is biodegradable) is usually made of PVC, polyurethane and textile-polymer composite microfibres. In plain English: plastic, petroleum and lots of CO2 emissions! Please don’t panic nor blame yourself if you’ve bought “vegan leather” products. I’m sure you did it with animals and nature in mind. I know I did! Messing up and learning are both part of life, guys. The important thing is what we do with the new lessons and knowledge the universe is sending our way! If you have a closet full of “vegan leather” (aka plastic) products, REUSE them. Many times. Until they break. And then, get them fixed and keep using them! And, when you go shopping, read labels. Ask about the products you are purchasing and wearing. Where do they come from. What’s their story. What are they made of. If you are still willing to buy plastic shoes, choose brands that make shoes from recycled plastic and support their practices of reducing waste, water and CO2 emissions.

Other labels or words to look for:

1) Ethical or fair-trade: Does the brand or product have our planet and people in mind? This means that the hands that made your product were paid a fair wage and provided with humane and healthy working conditions, health insurance, and fair opportunities. (Watch "The True Cost" film to learn more)

2) Sustainably sourced: In fashion, this usually applies to fibers. Organic cotton, bamboo, soy, peace silk. This label tells us these raw materials were harvested and processed in a sustainable way. Another label you may see is “Rainforest Alliance Certified”. This means the company making the products was audited and granted this seal because of their eco-friendly and fair-trade practices and their efforts to protect people and our rainforests, reducing our global deforestation crisis.

3) Non-toxic: This applies to the dyes used to make your colorful t-shirt, skirt, jean, dress, etc. Always look for plant-based alternatives. In other words, products that have been dyed with colors made from plants, flowers, clay, and other natural materials. Aka: non-toxic to our earth AND your health! (Whatever you put on your skin is absorbed by your body, travels through your blood system and feeds your cells!) “RoHs certified” also falls within this category, and means the colors used did not contain any hazardous nor harmful substances.

4) Cruelty-free: This means no animals were harmed in the process of making the product. No fur, no leather, no animal torture.

These are just a few labels and very important ones. I’ll keep sharing more with you in my next posts, always making sure I don’t give you an information overload or freak you guys out. It’s all in the daily baby steps. Remember that!

Ps: Two sustainable shoe brands I adore are Verdura Shoes and Z Shoes Organic.

Verdura shoes are made from recycled fishing nets, natural cork and plant based dyes. They are also fair-trade and handmade in Italy. I have their beige booties and LOVED.

Z Shoes Organic sneakers are comfy, fair-trade and made with natural and renewable rubber (extracted from Amazonian trees by making tiny cuts to their outer layers. No killing trees here!) for the shoes’ soles, and organic cotton fabric dyed with plantbased colors. No plastic here AT ALL!  To get your Z Shoes Organic, use code “waterthruskin” for $10 off!

Sustainable Bohemian Style

As you guys may have already seen on my Instagram feed or my blog, I'm all about that bohemian vibe! Like... if I could walk barefoot 24/7, I would be that happiest soul alive. Seriously! But, I'm also a social entrepreneur who is always on the go, which is the perfect opportunity for me to find ethical bohemian brands and give them with a "ready for everything" twist. This look is probably one of my all-time favorites. Eco-friendly, vegan, fair-trade, charity-oriented and sustainable. Doing good is as easy as choosing the brands you shop and support wisely!

Crystal Necklaces by Joanne Stone: Besides ethical and sustainable fashion, crystals are another passion of mine, and there's nothing that makes me happier than being able to carry them 24/7 as jewels! For this look, I layered three different necklaces made by Joanne stone with raw crystals, gold, and a cotton cord. I'm wearing the following crystals with their healing purposes:

1) mini-kunzite: awakens the heart to unconditional love. Encourages self-expression and creativity, and has the power to connect intuition, intellect and inspiration.

2) light smokey quartz: relieves stress and negative emotions, and promotes pragmatic thoughts.

 3) clear quartz point: most powerful healer and energy amplifier. It cleanses the soul deeply and protects from negative energy.

And some people think sustainable fashion isn't cool?!

Let's start 2017 with some eco-friendly and cruelty-free fashion choices, shall we? I'm absolutely obsessed with this look. Head to toe! Especially my heels! After going vegan and leaving the Private Banking world behind for a life of consciousness and passion, I sold and donated all my designer shoes. The Christian Louboutins  (yes, I had those red soles!) hurt me the most. Not only because of the price I paid (I know, I had my mind somewhere else at that time!) but because the nude pumps I had made every outfit look beautiful. Until, I found these vegan heels! There's honestly NO EXCUSE, people. Dressing consciously should be an everyday thing. There are sustainable alternatives for every single product in your closet! Here are the details of this look.

Nude Heels by Cult of Coquette: vegan leather, fair-trade, handmade 5inch heels!!!

Animal Print Clutch by Big Bubble Bags: made from recycled bubblewrap! Doesn't get more eco than this! Let's reuse the bubblewrap other companies throw away! Use CODE: WTS15 for 15% discount!

"Let's Stay Together" Tee by Thinking Mu: made with organic cotton and fair-trade! Use CODE: NTVH for discount!

Jeans by Gap: Yes!! Gap is taking new initiatives to reduce water use and pollution and is part of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition where companies are evaluated on material types, products, facilities and processes based on a range of environmental and product design choices. They are also planning to add measures for labor and social standards. Read more about Gap Inc (Gap and its affiliate brands) here

Sunnies by Wuudz Sunglasses: This brand is everything! The sunglasses are made with bamboo, wood and plantbased acetate, and the box they come in is eco-friendly and has the following encrypted  at the front: "Avanza con los pies en la tierra y la mirada en el infinito" which translates to something like: "Grow with your feet on the ground and your sight on infinity". Handmade and fair-trade too!

Conscious Bohemian. Always!

A month ago I had the opportunity to be part of the most beautiful event planning photoshoot I’ve seen in these 28 years of mine. A natural, eco-friendly, bohemian scene taken out of one of my dreams and I, of course, got to dress like a bohemian princess for it! You guys can read the entire story here, or scroll below to read about the conscious fashion brands I wore. xo

Dress and Mala by MettaLovingKindness: Fair-trade and handmade by artisans in India. Each purchase helps empower artisans worldwide and supports different charities Metta works with. If you live in Miami, visit their store in Key Biscayne!

Gladiator sandals by ByBlanch: vegan and eco-friendly leather. Ethical and handmade in Spain. I adore these sandals. They are so easy to style!

Boho silver bracelets by Pugoka: Ethical and handmade in Bolivia. Empowers Bolivian artisans and supports different charities. I'm obsessed with their bright colors!

Boho necklace by Yvera: Ethical and handmade in Bolivia.

Eco-comfy look for a rainy Miami day!

Today's conscious look! I wish we could've taken better pictures but it has been raining nonstop in Miami and it was impossible, guys! (I think my messy hair explains the weather perfectly!) :p Nonetheless, this outfit is one of my favorites! Mindfulness and comfort head to toe!

Let's start with the recycled plastic sneakers. I've been looking for a pair like these for so long! Ones that are comfortable, chic, eco-friendly and vegan. Melissa Shoes has done it again! These shoes are not only made from recycled plastic but Melissa also reuses 99% of water, waste, and unsold stock from previous collections!

Jeans by Good Society: These babes are fairly made with vegan materials, organic cotton, and recycled accessories (buttons, labels, and tags). Plus, the process of designing and producing these jeans is carried out without the use of chemicals. As if that were not enough, GoodSociety supports reforestation projects through "Treedom" to increase CO2-absorption. Did you guys ever think a pair of jeans could do so much for our world?! You can get yours at beadandreel.com

"Let's Stay Together" Tee: This tee by ThinkingMu says it all. WE ARE ONE. Nature, animals, humans. You simply can't separate us and ThinkingMu is taking that to the next level by designing fair-trade clothes in Barcelona made from organic cotton, natural fibers and biodegradable dyes. Their entire line is mind-blowing! I'm obsessed! You can get yours at Nomadtribeshop.com. Use code WTS15 for 15% discount.

Cross-body Bag: Gray on the outside, blue on the inside. Made with vegan leather by PixieMood

That comfy planet-loving boho look!

Happy Saturday, babes! So.. yesterday I had the most amazing fashion photoshoot with Christine Michelle Photography solely focused on what I like the most: Fashion with a Conscience! This look is not only incredibly comfortable and, in my opinion, very boho chic, but also extremely mindful of our beautiful planet and earthlings. As most of you know, I focus my style not only on looking great but also on making sure every single item I wear and promote is vegan, fair-trade, cruelty-free, eco-friendly and charity-oriented. If you want to find out more about why this shopping and lifestyle shift is so important, read about the negative effects of the leather and fur industry on our environment by clicking here.

Ok, so let's go straight to the blissful point... Kind fashion brands. ;)

-31Bits Necklace: Recycled paper necklace handmade in Uganda, Africa, with the goal of empowering women and men to rise above poverty through 31Bits Programs. After 5 years in the program, the beneficiaries are ready to graduate educated, healthy and empowered to manage a business with sustainable income.

-Matt & Nat Bag: Vegan leather and recycled plastic interior lining. Not only do these bags look and feel like genuine leather but their colors and Matt & Nat's entire Women & Men's collections will leave you in awe. Do I need to say more?

-Monkee Genes: A question I've been getting a lot recently is "What ethical denim brand to use?". Well, this is it guys. Monkee Genes' motto says it all "No Blood. No Sweat. No Tears" and its mission is focused on designing and manufacturing ethical and fair-trade jeans by paying workers decent wages and providing them with health benefits and safety standards, and also by raising awareness of child slavery and helping put an end to it. The pair I'm wearing is the Twill Cotton Skinny BUT, after watching a few DIY Youtube videos, I gave my jeans a ripped look. Nothing like adding your creative touch to your closet!

-By Blanch Booties: I'm obsessed with these brown ankle boots. By Blanch is a European brand that makes gorgeous and comfortable shoes with high quality vegan materials such as polyurethane and vegetable oil coating. Every pair is made in Spain and is highly durable (believe me, I've been wearing mine nonstop) and looks and feels exactly like genuine leather.

-Organic Tee: Organic cotton tee by Econscious. I'm wearing a Medium size so it fits a bit looser.

Planet-loving WINTER Style

It’s been a while since I last posted a fashion style story on the blog. I truly apologize for that guys! The past four months have been so insanely busy with traveling that I didn’t get a chance to dedicate my time to something as important as planet-loving fashion. I decided to post this look today because it’s winter time and even Miami is facing low temperatures right now! This means that people everywhere are running to their closets to take out their leather boots and fur coats, or they even go to the nearest stores to buy them. Reality it is, most of us have no clue how harmful the leather and fur industries are to our animals and planet as a whole. Therefore, I've decided to focus a little more on fashion during the next few weeks. With that being said babes, here’s a head-to-toe look that is eco-friendly and 100% vegan. Not to mention INCREDIBILY comfy! ;) Let me know if you like it!

Let’s start with my faves…these boots!!! They are not only made from recycled plastic but they are also two designs in one. Seriously! They are detachable and you can wear them tall or short.  These two-piece Melissa boots have me head over heels!

Vegan leather bag. What can I say? LOVE at first sight. Grey on the outside, blue on the inside, light, cross-body and VEGAN!

Vegan leather jacket: Looks like real leather but is not. :) Obsessed with Dakota's jacket line.

Dress/Shirt: For this look I mixed two garments of my closet:

·      Eileen Fisher’s organic cotton sleeveless white shirt (Her brand promotes Organic farming and supports clean air and water. I bought size L to be able to wear it long.)

·      Eileen Fisher’s vegan black dress (Size Small so the dress fits shorter.)

Gold Buddha mala. This line is entirely made with eco-friendly materials and healing stones.

Gold Buddha short necklace. Made with eco-friendly materials.

Not your ordinary Monday.

Monday's mood. ;) I felt like taking my hippie look to a different level today and added some color to it along the way. The best part of it? Every piece is vegan and charity-loving! Who said Mondays have to be boring?!!

Vegan Leather Gladiator Sandals. I've talked about these over and over again because they are one of a kind!!! Vegan leather that does not look like plastic. Boho-Chic, comfortable and cruelty-free!

Free People Shorts. Not much to say about these other than: we all need a good pair of denim shorts! :p

Boho Blouse. Mine was sold out but I found one similar to it which looks even better!!!

Free People Fringe Collar. One of my jewelry obsessions! Beautiful and it adds a strong boho touch to every look.

Handmade Boho Clutch: I'm in love with this clutch not only because of it's perfect design and colors but because it is handmade, unique and empowers women in Asia.
